Charlie's Chatter

Hi, seems an age since I wrote to you. I am beginning to feel my age and Christine & John don’t seem to realise it. I am at present baby sitting a kitten called Pixie. She is a very young upstart and gives me no respect; she bites my ears, tail, and face!! That's when I am asleep. When awake she insists I wash her. Must say I like her cuddling in with me.

Sometimes I get a bit of peace when Pixie goes to play with Thomas; he is a bit older and much wiser. He has a sort of long shaggy coat and to my mind looks scruffy but the humans think he is lovely, (he sucks up to everyone, purrs all the time and insists on following them around the house)

I am in good health and looking forward to Christmas when our new grandchild Henry comes. Bet I get no peace as he is crawling at present and by then may be walking - must remember to tuck in my tail.

I have also lost one of my friends in the house – Polly. She was nearly 22years old and was always the "Top Cat". Her place has been usurped by Basil even Hewie is in awe of him. Polly was known as the cattery greeter as she was always out there meeting visitors and checking up on the volunteers.

Raffle - There will be a raffle for members and the winners will be notified the same day.

Wheel of Chance - Weather permitting the Wheel of Chance will be at Rotary House. Donations of bottles and chocolates always welcome for this event.

Sukie Sooty & Sue Sometimes, for no reason, a cat doesn't get a home. Sukie is the most loving, gentle, good looking cat but he keeps being missed. Sooty is still here as we felt Sukie needed to have his paw held, and Sue is with them as both of them are so gentle with other cats and kittens. So we hope they can get homes soon!!!

LEO The cattery's resident lovely Leo, long haired, very pretty cat; who has had an immune disease since he was 6 months and has coped very well, started to be unwell a few months ago. Despite many tests nothing definitive was diagnosed though the vets were concerned regarding the high white blood count.

Finally he disappeared for 3½ days and was only found thanks to the vigilance of Basil who did a merecat impression and alerted us to the fact Leo was in the garden. Had we not found him there is no doubt he would have died. He was rushed to the vets put on drip etc and was found to have…COW POX yes you've read that correctly. Apparently it is rare but not that rare and is in most cats - not even noticed by their owners.

As Leo is immune challenged he took it really badly. The treatment was INTERFERON, which is an anti-cancer drug and very expensive. As we write this he is getting better but due to the length of his illness and being nursed upstairs in a bedroom he is finding it difficult for the other household cats to accept him.

Fingers crossed he will continue to improve and regain his place with the others.

Rainbow Corner - Regular readers of the website will know this feature and it is particularly sad to report that we have ourselves had to say goodbye to Ermine and her sister Spicey who have lived at the cattery for many years. Both had battled liver cancer for over a year and died within weeks of each other. Spicey's pen without them seems empty (despite of course being full with new cats and kittens).

And of course there was the lovely gentle Sage only with us a very few weeks but she crept into all our hearts. At least she had the pleasure of sitting in the warm sun.

Finally not least was little Peanut who in her short, too short, life made such an impact on everyone who met her. We cannot thank enough all the people who tried to help her, from the veterinary health centre (esp. Rachael, who took her home and kept her alive the 1st weekend after the intricate op she had to free her mouth to Alec Smithson at the Woodcroft Veterinary Group, Cheadle Hulme, where all the staff gave their services and expertise free of charge, to of course Christine Meakin who brought her up from 2 days old. She took Peanut with her everywhere, usually in her bra to keep the tiny kitten warm. She really lived her short life to the full.
